Benign Prostatic Hyperlasia (BPH) Overview

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is abnormal enlargement of the prostate glands at a faster rate than normal growth. Enlarged prostate glands blocks the urethra leading to difficulty when passing out urine. Its symptoms become strong on cold weather or when faced with emotional stress. Pain experienced does not necessarily indicate the extent of prostate glands enlargement. It is possible to find a patient with small enlargement experiencing severe pain than those with larger prostate glands. If not treated on time, the condition can lead to urinary tract, gall bladder or kidney damage.

BPH Signs
It is easy for one to tell if he is suffering from an enlarged prostate gland by simply observing the urinating pattern. Men suffering from this condition frequently feel the urge to urinate for more than ten times in a day; this urge becomes more frequent at night. One finds it difficult to start the passing of urine even when ready to urinate. While passing urine, the pressure is usually weak due to partial blockage of the urethra. After finishing, there is a feeling that you did not pass out all the urine.

Frequent pain in the urinary tract while urinating or when ejaculating is another common sign. In some cases, the urine passed out is brown in color or bloody and has a foul smell.

Possible BPH Causes
The condition is common in males with erectile dysfunction above 40 years age bracket. Individuals with no or little physical activities are also at a high risk of prostate enlargement. According to New River Urology, certain health conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular related complications have been associated with enlarge prostate glands. This disease is hereditary and can be passed from one generation to the next through genes.

Diagnosis of an enlarged prostate gland is done by examining individual genetic background, physical body examination or through different medical tests by a qualified urologist.

BPH Treatment
Treatment of this condition is based on the symptoms experienced by the patient and their influence to daily life. Depending on the severity, the following treatment options might be recommended.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle routine in order to avoid further enlargement of the prostate gland. This treatment is recommended for mild cases. Some of the suggested lifestyle changes include reduced liquid intake, avoiding caffeine and alcoholic drinks, regular exercising of the pelvic muscles and training the bladder to hold urine for long time.

Different medications are also recommended to ease the pain and shrink the enlarged prostate gland. In serious cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia, minimal invasive alternatives or medical surgery are performed in order to remove the enlarged prostate gland.
